History of St. Patrick’s Day

By, Kairi Honda

Most people think that St. Patrick’s Day is just a day where you wear green. In reality, it is a holiday celebrating St. Patrick himself. St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish; he was born in Britain. When he was 16, he was kidnapped and sent overseas for slavery to tend for sheep in Ireland for seven years. It’s said that he heard a voice in his dreams telling him to escape, so he found a passage onto a pirate ship and escaped. Then, after reuniting with his family, the voice told him to go back to Ireland to spread Christianity. It was tough, but after he died, people regarded him as a saint. That’s where St. Patrick’s Day came from.

Movie Review – Les Miserables

By, Piglet

WARNING: If you are not a fan of tragic movies then read no further. Les Miserables is the saddest movie I have ever seen, but also the best. The story is complex, and you have to pay attention to the movie to understand it.

The story goes like this: A man named Voujean steals a loaf of bread and goes to prison for nineteen years because of it. When he finally leaves prison, he is given papers to warn that he is a dangerous man. He tries to get a job, but with his papers nobody will take him. Then a bishop takes him in for a night, feeding him and letting him stay overnight. That night, Voujean stole the bishop’s silver and his money. When he tried to flee from the bishop’s house, the guards of the city caught him red-handed and Voujean said that the bishop had given him the silver. The guards took Voujean back to the bishop’s house and told him everything. Then the kind bishop let Voujean go free with even more silver, but tells him to use the silver to become an honest man. Voujean then tears up his papers, thus starting a new life.

Voujean became the mayor of a town where a poor woman lived. She was recently fired from her job in a factory and was in a panic because now she could not pay the debt for her daughter, who was working for some nasty innkeepers that were selfish and greedy. Voujean finds the woman and promises to take care of Casset, the woman’s daughter. Voujean and Casset had to run from Javert, the jail keep from when Voujean was in prison. They manage to escape from Javert. Then, about ten years later the French revolution started, and a boy named Marius was part of it. Marius fell in love with Casset, but his friends didn’t approve. Marius must go to war and somehow make it back safe to Casset. And the rest, well, you will have to see it for yourself!

Vampire Knight

By, Rikiryou Rei

R: Hello and welcome to the next installment of our anime review.
K: Rei is it just me or does no one ever read these things?
R: Just have faith Kairi… Just have faith…
K: BUT IT IS SO HARD!
R: I know, I know, just calm down.
K:*Sniffles* Okay… So! What anime are we doing today?
R: Well, I was thinking one with vampires.
K: I do not care what anyone says. VAMPIRES. DO. NOT. SPARKLE.
R: THEY DON’T! THEY RIP PEOPLE APART AND DRAIN THEM OF EVERY DROP OF THEIR BLOOD! *clears throat*I mean, I was talking about vampires that actually DO something.
K: Those types of vampires are really hard to find nowadays… So what anime did you have in mind? Hellsing? Vampire Knight? Vampire hunter D? Blood+? Chibi Vampire? Bloody Kiss? Millennium Snow? Rosario+Vampire? Dance in the Vampire Bund? Shiki?
R: Do you even know what half of those shows are? And weren’t you just saying it’s hard to find decent vampires? That is a lot of vampire anime.
K: DON’T ASK ME SO MANY QUESTIONS AT ONCE!
R: DON’T BE A HYPOCRITE!
K: …Ah, touché.
R: …What? You know what, never mind. We are reviewing the second one you said.
K: … Sooooo… We’re doing Chibi Vampire?
R: No, idiot! We’re doing Vampire Knight.
K: ICHIJOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU!
R: Yes Kairi, Ichijou is in this anime.
K: Tee hee! Hey, do you think Emillia has watched this yet?
R: This is her we’re talking about. What do you think?
K: …Ah, touché.
R: Is she still in her closet?
*Somewhere far away in a random closet*
E: Emillia Land is almost finiiiiiiiiiiiished!
*Back to Kairi and Rei*
K: Probably.
R: Putting her aside, not like it’s hard to do, we are going to be talking about Vampire Knight today.
K: WOOHOO! GO TAKUMA!
R: Silence Kairi! Anyway, this anime is about a school called Cross Academy. In this academy there are two classes: the Day Class and the Night Class.
K: The Night Class is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better.
R: Why? Because Ichijou Takuma* is in it!
K: Yup! That’s the only reason I need!
R:*Sigh* Anyways, what most people don’t know is that the Night Class is made up entirely of vampires, while the Day Class is made up entirely of humans. Cross Kaien is the headmaster of the school, and he believes that both humans and vampires can coexist peacefully. Many people disagree with him.
K: HE IS SO MISUNDERSTOOD! HE’S JUST LIKE EMILLIA!
R: …They even act somewhat alike…. I still find the Headmaster more fun to be around though. As I was saying, many disagree with the Headmaster’s point of view. The majority of these people are from the Senate, the governing body for vampires, and the Hunters’ Association, a group of humans with some vampire-like traits that hunt down crazy vampires.
K: THEY ARE WRONG! HUMANS AND VAMPIRES CAN GET ALONG JUST FINE!!!
R: I know Kairi, I know. Anyway, the mainer** characters are named Cross Yuuki, Kiryuu Zero, and Kuran Kaname. Yuuki and Zero are the Headmasters adopted children.
K: You wouldn’t catch Zero admitting that the Headmaster is his father though. He is a complicated child.
R: YOU WOULD BE TOO IF YOU WENT WHAT HE WENT THROUGH! IF YOUR FAMILY WAS KILLED BY VAMPIRES IN FRONT OF YOUR VERY OWN EYES, YOU WOULD BE A COMPLICATED CHILD TOO!
K: Oh, getting defensive, are we?
R: DON’T YOU DARE TALK BAD ABOUT ZERO, YOU HEARTLESS JERK!
K: So what?
R: I heard Ichijou only likes girls that are nice to EVERYONE!
K: I’LL BE GOOD ICHIJOU, I PROMISE! I TAKE BACK EVERYTHING I SAID REI! ZERO IS NOT A COMPLICATED CHILD!
R: Good girl. Anyway, Kaname is the dorm president of the Moon dorms, the place where the Night class resides. They wear white uniforms. The Day class stays in the Sun dorms. They wear black uniforms. Putting that aside and going back to the vampires, the only reason we actually watched the show. There are, like, five different classes of vampires. Pureblood is the top class. Kaname is a pureblood. He is the strongest vampire in the school. No one knows the limits of purebloods’ powers.
K: The next class is for aristocrats. Takuma is in this class! He’s also the vice president of the Moon dorms! He’s so adorable!
R: All of the Night class is made up of vampires, with the exception of Kuran Kaname. Other vampires include Souen Ruka, Aidou “Idol” Hanabusa, Touya Rima, Shiki Senri, and Kain “Wild” Akatsuki. Those last two are my favorites, besides Zero. Anyway, the Night class vampires I just mentioned are all main characters. They all play a big part in the story in some way or another.
K: Yeah, they do! But Yuuki, the most useless character in this show, is the mainest** character. She was abandoned ten years ago in the mild of winter, found by Kaname, and then taken to live with Cross Kaien.
R: A couple years later, Zero’s family is killed by Hio Shizuka, another pureblood. He goes to live with the Headmaster as well.
K: and then they all go off on an adventure!
R: Well, pretty much. There’s not much else to say, I mean we can’t really say anything without spoiling the show…
K: True… Well, I guess this is good-bye/. I hope someone reviews this time…
R: Me too. I’m starting to feel lonely with only two losers as company.
K: Hey!
R: Anyway, leave some comments and suggestions! They are always welcome! You can even criticize1 I don’t care!
K: She really doesn’t… BYEEEE!!!! [^_^]
